Brasserie de Silly scooped two medals at the 2019 Brussels Beer Challenge; a gold for Silly Saison and silver for Scotch Pinot Noir Barrel Aged.
Brussels Beer Challenge 2019
The eighth edition of the Brussels Beer Challenge, the international ambassador for beer culture, was held between the 1st and 3rd November in the flamboyant, brand new conference venue in Mons (Bergen), the MICX (Mons International Congress eXperience). It took 90 jury members three mornings to taste a total of 1,650 beers from 35 countries. Brewers from Belgium introduced their finest beers to see how they measured up against the very best the beer world has to offer. The results were announced at the Horeca Expo trade fair in Ghent on Monday 18th November. The Belgian beers won 76 awards, two of which went to Brasserie de Silly. The United States finished second with 46 gongs, followed by Italy with 24 medals, the Netherlands (21) and China (18). We are very proud to see our family brewery recognised in this way. We managed to distinguish ourselves from our national and international competitors, a number of mega-breweries amongst them. These medals are our inspiration to continue to invest in quality in every area: brewing, packaging, delivery and customer services.
Silly Saison
Silly Saison is a top-fermented beer of the saison type. This amber beer with a 5% alcohol by volume is a light, pleasant thirst-quencher that is brewed with aroma malts plus Kent and Hallertau hops. Silly Saison is fruity and slightly sweet with a refreshing finish. This invigorating beer is available in bottles (33cl and 75cl) and from the tap (20 l). Silly Saison won gold in the beer style Pale & Amber Ale: Bières de Garde ambrée.
SILLY Scotch Pinot Noir Barrel Aged
Silly Scotch is a brown, top-fermented beer of the scotch type with an alcohol by volume of 8%. This scotch takes on a coppery-red colour in the glass and is covered by a beige collar. Its complex aroma yields impressions of brioche with currants, candied fruit and fresh raspberry. This generous beer tastes full in the mouth and is reminiscent of liqueur, honey and caramel with, in the finish, touches of prunes and toasted malt. Every year Brasserie de Silly matures its scotch in previously used barrels. Earlier editions had been resting in barrels used for Bordeaux, port, cognac, whisky, chardonnay or Nuits Saint Georges. The 2019 edition has matured in Pinot Noir barrels, characteristic of Burgundy wines, which resulted in a unique, subtle Silly Scotch. The Pinot Noir Barrel Aged version of Silly Scotch is available in 75cl bottles. The beer was awarded a silver in the beer style Flavoured Beer: Wood/Barrel Aged higher than 10% ABV.
